A Welcome to Liang JianNan

A number of alumni with their spouses and kids had a small get-together in Los Angeles, USA today to welcome Liang Jiannan and his daughter, who had traveled across the Pacific Ocean from Hong Kong for a vacation in the area. We spent a wonderful afternoon chatting and tasting dim sum in a restaurant room. This was first time I met Liang Jiannan after graduation and I would say he was the only one who changed little among us since 1982. He looked in his early thirties, please correct me if I was mistaken. Here are some snapshots from the gathering: (click each picture to enlarge)

It happened this morning that three of families at the table had a grown up kid attending the SAT test for college education next year. We had to admit, when seeing our kids right on the threshold of college, that we were no longer the same. But just looking at Liang Jainnan’s picture with the daughter, we know he still has many years to go before this striking feeling arrives upon him. Nothing in the world can trade that off. During the conversations at the table, I realized the one important factor that had made him so young was that he is a typical character of high emotional quotient (EQ), a term I heard of a lot but did not yet comprehend. I’d like to present a quotation from Greek philosophy Aristotle to define EQ “Anyone can become angry-that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way-this is not easy.” It’s true that our emotional actions and reactions affect every aspect of who we are and how we live. Thank Liang Jiannan for bringing up the term at the table and you yourself were a testimonial of its significance.

The reunion in 2004 at GuangWai is coming. We were generally inclined to have this great event done in an informal way. I think with so many successful alumni who possess high IQ and EQ, the reunion will become our memorable landmark in our life.
